Piscataway, NJ, December 16, 2009 - SCOPE Alliance, an association of leading Network Equipment Providers (NEPs), today announced its Middleware Portability Project and CPU Benchmarking Recommendations. Both initiatives provide the commercial off-the-shelf ecosystem vendors with new insights into NEPs’ requirements for middleware and benchmarking.
The Middleware Portability Project addresses the middleware layer in a carrier-grade base platform (CGBP). The project was created to analyze portability and interoperability issues of the CGBP that arise when the base platform is implemented in a system composed of building blocks from various vendors.
“The Middleware Portability Project further demonstrates our commitment as an Alliance to enable the deployment of carrier-grade base platforms for service provider applications,” said SCOPE Alliance Chair Leslie Guth. “CGBP middleware must be able to interoperate across multiple dimensions and our work in this area identifies scenarios that could impact building block interoperability and application portability.”
The SCOPE Alliance Middleware Portability Project results are outlined in a new whitepaper, Middleware Portability Use Cases. This whitepaper details several use cases that address multi-vendor configurations as well as lifecycle and operational scenarios.
SCOPE also released its new CPU Benchmarking Recommendations technical note. The paper provides recommendations to ecosystem suppliers regarding the benchmark configurations that are most applicable to NEPs and guidance on how to report benchmarking results. In accordance with SCOPE’s mission, the alliance addresses only open industry benchmarks in its analysis.
“We developed this technical note to provide critical guidance to ecosystem vendors about the benchmarks that matter the most to NEPs,” said Guth. “It can be very costly and difficult for NEPs to compare the relative performance of similar systems, so we compiled these recommendations in an effort to reduce the costs and overhead associated with benchmarking numerous configurations and running multiple benchmark suites.”
